Acetophenone is the simplest aromatic ketone, acetophenone boiling point (℃) is 202.3, acetophenone density(water=1) is 1.03 (20℃), relative vapor density is (air=1): 4.14. It exists in some plants in a free state of essential oils.

The pure product is a colorless crystal but most commercially available products are light yellow oily liquids. It smells like hawthorn. The odor of acetophenone smells like hawthorn. The water solubility of acetophenone is very low, but it is easily soluble in various organic solvents.

The chemical property of acetophenone is that it can carry out electrophilic substitution reaction, α-active hydrogen reaction and carbonyl addition reaction on the benzene ring of acetophenone, and then mainly produce meta products. The major existing synthetic methods of acetophenone are: ethylbenzene oxidation method and phenol recovery method.

When we study the acetophenone structure we can find that the bond between the benzene ring and the carbon atom of acetophenone is connected by sp2 hybrid orbital, and the C atoms on the methyl group are connected by sp3 hybrid orbital.

Acetophenone has a wide range of usage, and has various applications in the yield of medicine, flavors and fragrances, and plastic heat stabilizers etc.

In the yield of flavors and fragrances, acetophenone can be synthesized to styralyl acetate and styralyl propionate, which are used in make-up flavors and food flavors,In terms of plastic heat stabilizers, acetophenone is also can be synthesized to DBM and SBM which are used as co-stabilizers for the calcium/zinc hydroxy acid salt stabilizing system to make PVC mineral water bottles and other plastic products.

In other applications, there are organic intermediates such as α-phenethylamine, which are used to synthesize fosfomycin and some other intermediates for resolution reactions and etc.
