What is 2-Pentanone
2-pentanone, also named as methylacetone or methyl propyl ketone, is colorless liquid with wine and acetone odor. It's soluble in ethanol, ethyl ether, slightly soluble in water.
It is flammable and its steam can form an explosive mixture with air. So it should be storaged away from fire and strong oxidants to prevent static electricity.
2-pentanone is permitted to be a spice in China, mainly used to prepare flavors such as banana, pineapple and assorted fruits. As an important industrial solvent, 2-pentanone is used in dewaxing high boiling petroleum fractions and as an intermediate in medicine and pesticide synthesis. It is also used as an extractant, a solvent for nitro paints, synthetic resin coatings and as an intermediate in organic synthesis.
